Raghav Chadha Quits AAM Aadmi Party, Leads 7 MPs to Bharatiya Janata Party in Massive Political Shock

Raghav Chadha Quits Aam Aadmi Party: In a dramatic development in politics that has shaken Delhi’s power corridors, Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has officially quit his party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and has announced his intention to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This isn’t an isolated event. Six additional AAP Rajya Sabha MPs have been following suit, making it one of the biggest political resignations of recent times.

Historic Defection Backed by Constitutional Provision

The mass departure is being carried out with care under the rules in the Anti-Defection Law outlined in the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. In accordance with the rules, if two-thirds of the legislators from a particular party decide to merge with a different party, it is protected from being disqualified.

In the case of AAP, the party was represented by only 10 representatives in the Rajya Sabha. With seven MPs leaving—which is precisely the threshold of two-thirds—the party has made sure that their change to the BJP is legally valid.

In confirming the move, Chadha announced in an official release that was shared on social media: “We will implement the clauses of the Constitution of India and rejoin the Bharatiya Janata Party.”

List of MPs Who Joined the BJP

The seven MPs who have switched their allegiance to the BJP include many prominent people:

  • Raghav Chadha – Former AAP national spokesperson and a key strategist
  • Ashok Mittal—The founder of LPU and the former Deputy Leader of the Rajya Sabha
  • Sandeep Pathak—AAP’s National General Secretary (Organisation)
  • Harbhajan Singh – Former Indian cricketer and MP
  • Swati Maliwal – Former DCW Chief
  • Vikram Sahney – Social entrepreneur and industrialist
  • Rajinder Gupta – A veteran business leader

Six of them are from Punjab, in the state of Punjab, where AAP has won a huge victory in the 2022 Assembly elections.

Internal Rift and Leadership Tensions

The sudden departure follows several weeks of increasing internal discontent within AAP. There are indications that a number of senior leaders were increasingly marginalized by AAP’s central leadership.

The tipping point seems to have been the recent vote to dismiss Raghav Chadha from the position of deputy leader of the Rajya Sabha. Incredibly, Ashok Mittal, who was his replacement in that position, is also among the people who have joined the BJP.

Sources say that the group was considering this idea for a long time, with the group citing ideological shifts and insufficient internal consultation as major factors.

Major Blow to AAP’s National Presence

This change in political direction is perceived as a serious loss for the Aam Aadmi Party, particularly on a national scale. With only three members left within the Rajya Sabha, the party’s capability to influence legislation or be a viable opposition influence within the Upper House is drastically reduced.

On the contrary, on the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party is poised to benefit both in terms of numbers and strategically. The addition of experienced lawmakers who know the AAP’s internal dynamics will strengthen the position of the BJP in the parliamentary process.

A Turning Point in Delhi Politics

The defection of Raghav Chadha could be a pivotal moment in India’s political landscape, especially in the areas of Delhi and Punjab. The way the story plays out, it will alter alliances, influence the next elections, and change the power balance between the major political parties.
