TVK Chief Vijay Stakes Claim to Form Tamil Nadu Government

TVK Chief Vijay Stakes Claim to Form Tamil Nadu Government: Actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C. Joseph Vijay formally staked his claim to form the new government in Tamil Nadu, meeting Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at the Raj Bhavan on Wednesday.

The 51-year-old leader was at the residence of the governor, accompanied by the party’s top leaders and other senior leaders, including K.A. Sengottaiyan, N. Anand, CTR. Nirmal Kumar, former IRS official Arun Raj, along with Aadhav Arjuna. TVK came out as the most powerful party during the state elections for the state assembly, winning more than 108 seats. Because Vijay was a candidate and won the election in both constituencies, he’s obliged to resign from one seat according to the constitutional rules.

Congress Extends Support

The day before, Congress leader Girish Chodankar, as well as other top party leaders, made a call to Vijay and granted the backing of five MLAs, an action that has provoked a violent reaction from the political world.

DMK-Congress Alliance Under Strain

The Congress decision to support TVK has created a clear discord with long-time ally DMK. The spokesperson for the party, Kanimozhi NVN Somu, strongly condemned the gesture, saying that it was an “stab in the back,” and reminding Congress of the fact that DMK stood with them during difficult times. This development indicates rising tensions in and within the INDIA group at the national and international levels.

VCK Weighs Its Options

VCK director Thol. Thirumavalavan announced that the VCK would consider whether to accept TVK’s invitation for them to be part of their coalition. The VCK currently has two seats in the assembly and is a part of the DMK, which makes its next move politically important.

Dissent Within AIADMK

A different and interesting development has occurred: some newly elected AIADMK MLAs have been reported to have asked the leadership of the party to offer support to TVK, a sign of some internal discord within the main opposition party.

Governor to Decide Shortly

Governor Arlekar, who landed from Chennai after departing from Kerala early in the day, announced to his media sources that he’d make a formal announcement on inviting the biggest party—the TVK, for instance—to join the government in one or two days. Arlekar has been the governor of Kerala for the past year. He was appointed governor of Tamil Nadu on the 12th of March 2026.
