AIADMK Under Pressure to Support TVK: What Tamil Nadu’s Political Earthquake: Tamil Nadu is living through an era of political change it has never experienced before. In the very first election in the last decade, a political party that is not part of those two Dravidian giants—both the DMK and the AIADMK—has secured the highest number of seats in an assembly election in the state.
Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) stunned the entire country by winning 108 seats in the April 2026 Assembly elections. To form a government, however, you need the granting of 118 seats. That gap of only 10 seats puts one party in the center of the entire issue, and that’s the AIADMK.
The question Tamil Nadu — and the remainder of India — is currently looking to answer is simple. What happens if AIADMK changes its anti-TVK position and extends its assistance to Vijay? The decision will determine who will govern Tamil Nadu for the next five years.
What the 2026 Election Results Actually Mean
The 2026 April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections produced a majority-hungry assembly, which was the first time in the state’s history. The state’s political parties and alliances did not reach the 118-seat threshold in the legislature with 234 seats.
TVK was the single largest party, with 108 seats. The DMK-led alliance that was in power since 2021 fell to 73 seats with the DMK’s own party winning just 59. To make matters even more difficult for the DMK chief minister, MK Stalin lost his seat to Kolathur — making him the second chief minister in office in the history of Tamil Nadu to suffer such a personal loss. The AIADMK-led coalition won 53 seats, including AIADMK alone securing 47 seats.
The result erased a political order that was in place for over six years. The first time in the history of the Dravidian movement, Tamil political life was seized in the 60s an organization independent of the duopoly of DMK and AIADMK was in charge of the assembly. TVK had this happen at the very beginning of its first election, after it was established just two years ago in February 2024.
Who Is Vijay, and Why Did Tamil Nadu Vote for TVK?
Vijay is among the biggest Tamil Nadu film stars and is loved by millions throughout the entire state. When he announced his formation of TVK in 2024, he crafted his political platform around the empowerment of youth, social equality, and a clear separation from the existing political system that many people believed was unsustainable and corrupt.
The campaign of his candidate resonated the most with first-time voters and young voters who were unhappy with both the DMK and the AIADMK. The TVK’s 108-seat victory in its inaugural election is being compared with AAP’s historic win of Delhi in 2015. an outsider taking down an incredibly entrenched political machine on the back of a rising tide of anger and a sense of hope.
Vijay was elected unanimously as the party’s leader in the legislature of TVK in the wake of the polls and has already met with the Tamil Nadu Governor to formally assert his position to form the government. A ceremony to swear in the new leader is scheduled on May 7th, 2026.

Why Is AIADMK Under So Much Pressure Right Now?
This is a crucial aspect of Tamil Nadu politics today. AIADMK has contested the elections in the NDA alliance, aiming to be strongly against TVK. But the post-election calculations have drastically altered AIADMK’s internal calculations.
The 47 MPs in the AIADMK are a major bargaining power in the assembly. A majority of these MLAs are pressing the party’s general secretary, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, to support TVK. Their reasoning is simple—if AIADMK opposes an ailing DMK, the party will spend the rest of its life in a state of political oblivion. If it offers external support for TVK and retains power over the administration, it safeguards its standing in the electoral arena.
According to reports, the majority of the AIADMK’s 47 MLAs have been pushing Palaniswami to take action. The party’s senior leaders, CV Shanmugam as well as SP Velumani, have been leading the internal pressure. A stern warning has been sent to the leadership of the party—choose to take a decision fast or risk an internal split, with some MLAs deciding to join TVK according to their own preferences.
TVK Director General N. Anand met with Palaniswami on May 6th. This was a clear sign that back-channel talks are already in process. In the meantime, AIADMK MLA Leemarose Martin has publicly stated that Palaniswami himself was talking to Vijay. Denials by the party persist, but the reality is rapidly changing.
Congress Abandons DMK: Another Major Blow
In addition to the political turmoil, causing a political crisis and further political chaos, the Indian National Congress made a shocking announcement on the 6th of May. On May 6, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee declared all-out support for TVK in forming the government and officially walked out of the DMK as its long-term allies over the course of several years.
Congress added a condition to its backing: TVK must not include communities that do not adhere to the Constitution of India. The DMK claimed it was a “backstabbing” move. However, for TVK, the five seats in Congress made the total running to 113, which is five less than the 118-point mark. This is exactly the reason AIADMK’s vote is in the first place.
What This Means for Tamil Nadu’s Future
Beyond the drama of politics, this event has serious consequences for the state’s population of 80 million.
A stable government that is able to be in place for the full five-year time frame is vital for Tamil Nadu’s urgent issues involving unemployment among the youth, welfare of farmers, urban infrastructure, and water security, as well as industrial development. A fragile coalition based on small groups could result in unrest and policy stagnation in the middle of the year.
The rise of TVK suggests that Tamil Nadu’s citizens, particularly its huge young population, are ready to break away from the duopoly of DMK and AIADMK that has been in place for decades. What TVK is governed by and if it fulfills its promises will define the politics of the state for the next generation.
For AIADMK, the decision is crucial. It is time to support TVK and explain the choice to its traditional voters. If you are adamant, you run the risk of splitting from within. In either case, it is likely that the AIADMK of the past is not likely to endure this day in its current form.

Conclusion
Tamil Nadu stands at a crossroads. Vijay, as well as TVK, has done what appeared impossible—winning the most seats during their first election, despite being two of India’s toughest regional parties. The AIADMK’s vote in the next few hours will determine if that win will lead to a steady government or a period of political chaos. Whatever happens, the map of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has already been revised. The only issue is what will be built upon it.
