US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s Diplomatic Mission to Vatican and Italy: Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet with Pope Leo in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican on Thursday. The main purpose of the trip is to lessen tensions that exist between Washington and the Holy See, which have reached an all-time high due to the constant criticism of the Pope by President Donald Trump.
A Core Dispute Against the Vatican. In the last week, Trump claimed that Pope Leo indirectly promoted nuclear weapons and placed hundreds of millions of Catholics at risk due to his stance against military actions against Iran. The Pope reacted by defending the Church’s steadfast opposition to the use of nuclear weapons or violence, saying that his beliefs stem from the doctrines in the Bible. Restrained US-Italy Relationships The relations between the United States and Italy have been deteriorating significantly.
