Two Blasts Near Military Installations Rock Punjab in One Night: Punjab was devastated by two separate explosions that occurred on Tuesday night, both taking place near military and paramilitary facilities within hours of one another, which raised serious concerns regarding the state’s security apparatus.
Jalandhar: Blast Outside BSF Headquarters
The first explosion erupted around BSF Chowk in Jalandhar, close to Jalandhar, which is the Punjab Frontier headquarters of the Border Security Force. A two-wheeler on the roadside was the heart of the blast, the blast’s force scattering the damaged remains of the vehicle over the region.
Senior police officers rushed to the incident, and the zone was immediately closed off to conduct an investigation. Jalandhar’s Chief of Police Dhanpreet Kaur Randhawa claimed that the preliminary results did not suggest the involvement of a criminal, while affirming that BSF teams and forensic experts were brought in to find the reason. The driver is currently under investigation.
However, it was the Khalistan Liberation Army (KLA) that claimed responsibility for the incident through social media, declaring it was revenge against the arrest of a major suspect involved in the killing of two security guards near the border between India and Pakistan located in the city of Gurdaspur, Dorangla. The validity of the claim cannot be independently confirmed.
Amritsar: Explosion Near Army Cantonment
A few hours later, around 90 kilometres away, another blast was detected close to the wall that forms part of the Army cantonment along Khasa Road in Amritsar. The blast caused damage to a tin sheet that was fixed on the wall. It was said to be used to block the view from the outside. No injuries or structural damage were reported.
Amritsar Rural SSP Sohail Qasim Mir confirmed that police had received information regarding a loud noise in the area around 11:15 pm and immediately sent teams to the location. Initial investigation suggests that a piece of furniture might have been thrown towards the wall, which would have caused the noise.
Forensic experts, bomb disposal units, and rapid response teams were all sent to the site, and the collected materials were taken to the laboratory for analysis. A joint search and rescue operation conducted by the BSF and the army as well as the BSF was also initiated. This Wednesday, Amritsar police restricted the public movement to specific areas to help with the investigation.
Political Outcry
The twin incidents have provoked powerful political responses across parties.
Punjab Congress President and MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring condemned the attacks and called the incidents “deeply alarming” and questioned the person who tried to destabilise the state. Warring outlined the grave breakdown in the intelligence system and demanded accountability immediately from the Punjab government as well as the Centre.
Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla highlighted the regional sensitivity in the strategic sense in his speech, pointing out it is Amritsar is a popular tourist attraction as well as a vital border zone. The MP urged the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to personally intervene and initiate an open, high-level investigation, as well as urge greater security measures in the border districts of Punjab.
Going one move further, Shiromani Akali Dal’s leader and ex-minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia, urged the president of India to intervene and highlight the seriousness with which opposition leaders view their security concerns.
