S. Keerthana: The 29-Year-Old Who Made History as Tamil Nadu’s Youngest Cabinet Minister

S. Keerthana: The 29-Year-Old Who Made History as Tamil Nadu’s Youngest Cabinet Minister: When actor-turned-politician Vijay was sworn in as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister in 2026, all eyes were on his nine-member cabinet. There was a name that stood out because of its youth and youthfulness: Selvi S. Keerthana, born in the year 1996, a political figure from Tamil Nadu representing the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) from the Sivakasi constituency of the Virudhunagar district. When she was just 29 years old, she was the youngest person in the cabinet that changed the political history of Tamil Nadu.

Roots and Education: A Woman of Virudhunagar

Keerthana’s story is one that reveals calm determination from the southern part of Tamil Nadu. She is from Virudhunagar district and was born to Sampath. She earned her B.Sc. in Mathematical Sciences at a school that was affiliated with Madurai University and later went on to complete her M.Sc. in Statistics in the year 2019 at Pondicherry Central University. Her background in statistics reveals an analytical, sharp mind and skills that TVK recognized as a plus in their new state.

A Debut Win That Turned Heads

In 2026, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections were her first venture into the political arena, and she was able to make the vote count. She was the first candidate to win in her Sivakasi Assembly constituency representing the TVK party, securing the highest number of votes, 68,709, and beating her closest rival, Ashokan G of the Indian National Congress, by an average of 11,670 votes. This victory is all the more significant considering that Sivakasi is situated in the Ramanathapuram district. In the 2021 election, the seat was taken in the Ashokan G of the INC with 17,319 votes. That means Keerthana changed an INC Congress keyhold in TVK in just one electoral cycle.

Clean Record, Modest Means

Keerthana’s profile on the internet is one of transparency and simplicity. Keerthana has no criminal charges against her and has declared assets totaling the sum of 22.6 lakhs and the balance of 12.8 lakhs of liabilities. Before her political career, she was employed as a consultant. These particulars depict an educated young woman away from the dynastic privileges or political wealth.

TVK’s Youngest Face in the Cabinet

S. Keerthana, at 29 years old, is the youngest of the ministers who were sworn in alongside Vijay for the post of Tamil Nadu chief minister. She was elected an MLA at the age of 29 for the very first time in her life, taking at the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election from the Sivakasi constituency. The cabinet’s inclusion alongside the likes of former AIADMK long-time leader KA Sengottaiyan, as well as the party’s strategist Aadhav Arjuna, is a sign of Vijay’s intention to establish an administration that combines expertise with youthful, new enthusiasm.

The other prominent cabinet members include N. Anand, the general secretary of TVK and MLA from Thiyagarayanagar, and P. Venkataramanan, who is TVK’s treasurer, a practising advocate, and Vijay’s manager since 2000. Dr. KG Arunraj, a former doctor and civil servant, and Dr. TK Prabhu, a dentist and politician from Karaikudi.

Why Keerthana Matters

S. Keerthana’s rise in the polls is symbolic of an overall shift of the tide in Tamil Nadu politics. In a state dominated by veteran Dravidian party leaders who have been in the system, her inclusion in the cabinet at 29 with an advanced diploma, a clean criminal history, and a clean and tidy financial record is a sign of something truly new.

She is not a movie star’s daughter, nor a political heir, nor a party insider by birth. She’s a young lady from Virudhunagar who worked as a consultant statistician, stood for election, and was elected. That in itself is a compelling story.

S. Keerthana is part of the Tamil Nadu Cabinet, representing Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) under Chief Minister Vijay who was sworn in following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections.
