Indian Tanker’s Distress Call After ‘Clearance’: Tensions Escalate in Strait of Hormuz

Indian Tanker’s Distress Call After ‘Clearance’: A shocking audio recording has emerged that records the distress signal of an Indian-registered oil tanker which was believed to have been shot at by Iranian forces just after being granted the right to travel through the Strait of Hormuz. The incident has intensified tensions at one of the most crucial chokepoints in the world’s maritime system and forced many vessels to stop their voyage.

The recording shows Captain of Motor Tanker Sanmar Herald urgently calling for Iranian authorities: “Sepah Navy! Sepah Navy! This is the motor tanker Sanmar Herald! I was given the green light to leave! My name is to your top list! I was given the green light to leave! You’re firing now! Turn around!”

Ships Forced to Retreat Amid Gunfire

The audio was released a day after two merchant ships with Indian flags as well as a supertanker reported to have been hit by fire as they attempted to cross the strait. According to the officials, members belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired, causing the vessels to turn back.

The vessel was believed to have carried nearly two million barrels Iraqi crude oil in the time of the incident. Information from maritime intelligence suggests IRGC gunboats participated in the confrontation and redirected vessels to the west in the course of the incident. In addition, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) verified that 2 Iranian gunboats fired at an oil tanker in the vicinity.

Initial reports suggested that the fire took place in the vicinity of Qeshm as well as Larak islands, which are a sensitive stretch of the strait. A maritime security source also disclosed that a container ship could also have been hit in the course of the firefight.
