India Appoints New Chief of Defense Staff and Chief of Naval Staff; Both to Assume Office by May-End: Lieutenant General N. S. Raja Subramani will succeed General Anil Chauhan, who will complete his term on May 30th, 2026. In addition to his position as CDS, Subramani will also be the secretary of the Government of India, Department of Military Affairs, starting on the day he takes responsibility.
An officer who was decorated with more than thirty-five years of service. Subramani was appointed to the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985 following the completion of his instruction through the National Defence Academy (NDA). His academic qualifications include an M.A. Arts qualification at King’s College, London, as well as an M.Phil. in defense studies from Madras University. He was also a student in his time at the Joint Services Command Staff College in Bracknell, UK, and the National Defense College in New Delhi.
In the course of his remarkable career, Subramani was deployed in a variety of operational terrains and conflict zones. His most prominent assignments include:
- A Deputy Commander from a Rashtriya Rifles sector in Jammu & Kashmir
- Colonel General Staff (Operations) at Headquarters Eastern Command
- Commander of the 168th Infantry Brigade in Samba

- Defense attaché at the Embassy of India in Astana, Kazakhstan
- General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Command (from 2023)
- 47th Vice Chief of the Army Staff
- Military Advisor to the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS)
He was awarded his Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal for his outstanding contribution to national defense.
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Named New Chief of Naval Staff
In a separate appointment, Vice Admiral Krishna Swamithan is named the new director of naval staff, taking over from Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, whose term expires on May 31st, 2026.
Commissioned in the Indian Navy in 1987, Swaminathan graduated from the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham, UK; and the College of Naval Warfare, Karanja, as well as, in 1987, the United States Naval War College.
In his nearly four-decade-long career in the Navy, he has been the commander of several warships in the front line, for example,
- INS Vidyut and INS Vinash (missile vessels)
- INS Kulish (missile corvette)
- INS Mysore (guided missile destroyer)
- INS Vikramaditya (aircraft carrier)
His most enviable staff and administrative duties include the following:
- Chief Staff Officer (Training), Southern Naval Command, Kochi
- Flag Officer Sea Training, heading the Navy’s work-up organization
- Flag Officer Commanding, Western Fleet
- Flag Officer Offshore Defence Advisory Group and Advisor, Offshore Security and Defense, to the Government of India
- 46th Vice Chief of Naval Staff
- Controller of Personnel Services and Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters, Delhi,
- currently working as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command
He also played a key role in the establishment of the Indian Naval Safety Team, which oversees safety in operation across all sectors in the Navy. Swaminathan has been honored with his Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal for his dedication to the nation.
