India has welcomed the prompt response of US law enforcement agencies following the arrest of a 19-year-old man accused of planning a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Illinois. What Happened in Illinois?
According to the Palatine Police Department, the investigation began on October 11, when officers received information from the Mount Prospect Police Department regarding a possible mass-shooting threat.
The information originated from an individual who reported receiving concerning electronic messages from the suspect, identified by police as Alexandros Paporakis, a 19-year-old resident of Palatine, Illinois.
Investigators alleged that Paporakis had shared a document describing a plan to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in the Aurora area. He had also reportedly circulated images of a rifle, rifle magazines, body armour and other tactical equipment.
Police subsequently located and arrested the suspect as he was leaving his residence.
During a search of his home, investigators reportedly recovered a rifle, multiple loaded magazines, hundreds of additional rounds of ammunition and tactical equipment. Authorities also found a tactical vest with body armour and a patch displaying imagery associated with white supremacist extremism.
Investigators are examining the evidence to establish the full circumstances of the alleged plot and determine whether anyone else was involved.
Suspect Charged With Serious Offences
Paporakis has been charged with one count of making a terrorist threat, a Class X felony under Illinois law, and one count of unlawful weapons possession, according to reports.
Following a detention hearing, a judge ordered that he remain in custody.
Police said investigators examined electronic communications and a document attributed to the suspect that reportedly contained white supremacist and extremist views. The material allegedly included references to violence against people of South Asian heritage, particularly individuals of Indian descent.
Authorities believe the suspect may have been considering an attack on October 11. However, the allegations remain subject to the legal process, and the evidence must be evaluated by the courts.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting local authorities with the investigation.
