WHCD Shooting 2026: On the evening of the 25th of April, 2026, shots were fired on the main security screen during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, as well as other members of the Cabinet, were evacuated by the U.S. Secret Service.
How It Happened — Timeline
8.45 p.m. ET, Trump was escorted off the stage by the Secret Service, as Vice President JD Vance and a few Cabinet members were also removed. At 9:00 p.m. ET, U.S. Secret Service agents were shouting “shots fired,” and one agent declared on his radio that the shooter had been placed under custody.
It was around 8:15 p.m. at the bottom of the Washington Hilton—plates were banging, and glasses were cracking, and in front of the room was President Donald Trump, making his long-awaited return to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Trump later stated inside the White House that one Secret Service agent was shot but was saved by a bulletproof vest and that the First Lady, Melania, and Cabinet members were in excellent condition.
WHCD Shooting Security Response
Security officers fired at the suspect when he tried to force his way through a checkpoint located just outside the ballroom at the hotel. He was subdued before being taken away in handcuffs.
The suspect wasn’t struck by gunfire but was taken to a hospital, where he was evaluated. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche declared, “The system worked,” saying that the person “got off a couple shots” but was “immediately subdued.”

The Suspect: Cole Tomas Allen
Who Is Cole Allen?
Cole Tomas Allen, 31, was a resident of Torrance, California. He graduated from Caltech with a mechanical engineering degree from Caltech in 2017, and after that, he earned a master’s degree in information science and technology from California State University, Dominguez Hills, in 2025.
A LinkedIn profile with his name listed him as a part-time instructor for C2 Education, a test preparation and tutoring business. In addition, he was an indie game developer who released an online game titled “Bohrdom” on the Steam platform for $1.99.
How Did He Get to Washington?
He traveled via train to Los Angeles and then to Chicago, and later on, after that, he traveled by train from Chicago up to Washington D.C. Law enforcement sources say he stayed at the hotel on a Friday, the day before the incident.
Weapons
Allen owned the Maverick 12-gauge shotgun he bought in August 2025, as well as the Armscor .38 semi-automatic gun purchased in October 2023—all legally acquired. Allen was also equipped with multiple knives.
Was he on law enforcement’s radar?
The authorities said that the suspect wasn’t at risk before the shooting and that they believe that he did not act alone.
What Was the Target?
Acting Attorney-General Todd Blanche told CNN that the suspect seemed to be targeting people in Trump’s administration. Trump administration. Trump, on his own, when being asked by reporters if they believed that it was him who was targeted, said, “I guess.”

Charges and Legal Proceedings

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed that Allen was arrested on charges of having a firearm in the commission of a violent crime and assault on a federal agent with a dangerous firearm, and more charges are anticipated as the investigation continues. Allen is scheduled to appear in court on Monday and isn’t cooperating with the investigators.
Political and Security Implications
WHCD Shooting Blanche described the incident as a “wake-up call” for Congress to approve the Department of Homeland Security, which has been shut down since February.
Trump also referred to previous attacks on his life, including the July 2024 shooting that took place at his Pennsylvania rally and another incident that occurred in September 2024 on the West Palm Beach golf course.
