The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has dismissed Raghav Chadha from his post of Deputy Leader of the Rajya Sabha and nominated Ashok Mittal to replace him according to party sources.
The decision was announced in an official letter addressed by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat on April 2nd 2026. The letter also requested that Chadha is not given any speaking slot in the House according to the quota of the party.
Reason Behind the Move
The move is in response to Chadha’s silence on important party issues and his inability to attend several public gatherings arranged by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal. A former close aide to Kejriwal, Chadha played a significant role in the AAP’s policies, especially within Punjab in Punjab and Delhi.
According to party insiders, he has been slowly removed from organizing and campaigning in recent years, yet the activist has been active in bringing up issues like the rising cost of airfares and gig workers rights
Ashok Mittal Responds
Responding to his appointment Ashok Mittal stated that the party’s leadership has given him the responsibility of ensuring that he can be able to effectively present the party’s position at the Upper House.
He described the change in leadership as an “routine process” noting that the leadership roles within the group are rotated in order to provide the opportunity to learn for different members.
Mittal denied speculations about internal tensions, saying that AAP is a democratically-run party where duties are often transferred.
Clarification on Speaking Rights
In spite of the initial request for talking time Mittal was later able to clarify that each member of the party which includes Raghav Chadha have opportunities to address the Rajya Sabha.

AAP’s Strength in Rajya Sabha
Presently, AAP has 10 members of The Rajya Sabha, including seven from Punjab and three from Delhi and maintains a substantial representation of the Upper House.
Political Significance
The developments have prompted debates about internal tensions within AAP particularly in light of the fact that Chadha was once one of the newest of the most prominent leaders of the AAP party.
