BJP Takes Commanding Lead in West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has risen in this year’s West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 and has established a clear lead against the incumbent All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the most recent count developments that were released from the Election Commission of India (ECI). At 12:30 pm on May 4, 2026, the BJP was in the lead in 176 seats, exceeding the majority threshold of 148 seats in two-thirds of the assembly.
The Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was ahead in just 94 seats, an increase from its previous dominance on the electoral scene. The BJP’s ally, Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), was in the lead in one seat, which brought the NDA total to 177.
Key Highlights at a Glance

Suvendu Adhikari Confident of BJP Government Formation
West Bengal Leader of the Opposition and BJP candidate from Nandigram and Bhabanipur, Suvendu Adhikari, expressed his complete confidence in the party that will form the next state government.
“BJP is forming the government. Early trends show the BJP much ahead of the TMC,” Adhikari said to reporters.
He remarked that the Bhabanipur race could be “neck-and-neck” in the early phases of counting and he expressed his confidence that the BJP will win as the results are gathered. Bhabanipur is a prestigious seat that was once was held by Mamata Banerjee herself, and has turned into the most important symbol of battlegrounds during this election.

Anti-Incumbency and Hindu Vote Consolidation Drive the BJP Gains
Adhikari attributed the BJP’s booming performance to two key factors: a widespread anti-incumbency movement against TMC’s 14-year-old TMC government and what he called an impressive consolidation of Hindu votes for the BJP throughout the entire state.
He also cited an apparent split among minority voter patterns in some districts, such as Malda, Murshidabad, and Uttar Dinajpur—districts that have a large Muslim population that has historically been a major part of the TMC supporters’ base. The dispersion of minorities’ votes has been beneficial to BJP candidates in these areas.
Historic Voter Turnout: West Bengal Records 92.47% in 2026 Assembly Polls
One of the more notable aspects that will be evident during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections is the record-breaking turnout of voters. Based on the Election Commission of India, the state registered one of the highest ever participation percentages in all of the 294 districts that were conducted with two different phases.
- Phase I Turnout: 93.19%
- Phase II Turnout: 91.66%
- Overall Turnout: 92.47%
Political analysts believe that the incredibly high turnout reflects an emotional electorate—one driven by a strong sense of toward and against the current government. The past shows that large participation rates in West Bengal have often favored incumbents over challengers, and this trend could be taking place in 2026.
What the High Turnout Means for Bengal Politics
With almost 19 of 20 voters eligible to vote casting their ballots this year, that mandate—regardless of which party it favors has a substantial democratic impact. The experts at Psephology say that such numbers of voters reduce the effect of management at the booth and mobilization because the vast majority of the population of voters shows up no matter what.
What a BJP Victory Would Mean for West Bengal
If the BJP’s majority turns into a final majority, it will end the Trinamool Congress’s 14-year reign in West Bengal — a period marked by social welfare programs but also numerous allegations of political violence, corruption, bribery, and even controversial administrative decision-making.
For the BJP to win, West Bengal would represent an important milestone in its national expansion strategy, granting it a foothold in a state that has traditionally been averse to the saffron-led party. This would also create the conditions for the general elections in 2029, in which the 42 West Bengal Lok Sabha seats are highly significant.
Mamata Banerjee, one of the most determined political survivors of India, was slain in the past, but she has bounced back. If she is able to engineer a second reverse as the counting continues, it will be the main event of the moment.
