West Bengal Assembly Election Results 2026: As the counting of votes continued throughout the morning hours on 4 May 2026, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saw substantial gains within the 294-member West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Based on official statistics released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the morning, the BJP beat the threshold for a majority of 147 seats and established an early and definitive lead.

Official ECI data showed that the BJP was leading in 117 Assembly districts against those of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which was leading in 70 seats at the time of the 10:55 IST update. At 10:10 IST, it was clear that the trend had placed the BJP over the threshold of majority, which suggests a possible government-led formation.

2. Key Constituency Results and Notable Contests

2.1 Bhabanipur Constituency

The Bhabanipur seat witnessed one of the most tightly contested contests of the day, with the incumbent chief minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee against BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. The contest witnessed multiple shifts in the lead throughout the counting process. At 10:07 IST, at which time Ms. Banerjee had a lead of 1,996 votes. She was then followed by Mr.. Adhikari, taking the lead again around 10:35 IST by securing 6,380 votes to her 4,822. At 11:45 IST, Ms. Banerjee was able to consolidate a dominant advantage of more than 8,000 votes and had secured 17,244 votes to his 8,762.

2.2 Hingalganj Constituency

BJP candidate Ms. Rekha Patra was the leading candidate in the Hingalganj Assembly constituency by a 28008 votes, following the two rounds of counting according to the official ECI trends. Ms. Patra is one of those who suffered in the year 2024’s Sandeshkhali incident, which saw the suspended TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan named as the accused.

2.3 Panihati Constituency

Ms Ratna Debnath, mother of the victim of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case and BJP candidate from Panihati, was the leader from the constituency by a margin of more than 2,763 votes, according to information provided by the Election Commission of India.

2.4 Asansol Dakshin Constituency

BJP leader and sitting member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Ms Agnimitra Paul, held an overwhelming advantage within the Dakshin Asansol district with a margin of more than 20000 votes over the TMC’s candidate, Ms. Tapas Banerjee.

2.5 Nowda Constituency

The late Mr. Humayun Kabir, founder of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, was a leading candidate in the Nowda Assembly constituency by approximately 2,900 votes over the TMC’s candidate, Mrs. Sahina Momtaz Khan.

3. Statements by Political Leadership

While counting continues, BJP Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Mr. Suvendu Adhikari, said he was confident the party was in good shape to form the state’s next government. The initial figures indicate that the BJP was leading by more than 135 seats, and the TMC was trailing by around 100. Mr. Adhikari claimed that the result reflected a strong consolidation of voters in Hindu communities, who voted for the BJP, as well as a split reported in the Muslim voting in various districts. He also mentioned anti-incumbency sentiment against the TMC as a major factor. TMC is a major contributor.

The BJP’s supporters gathered outside its Kolkata office to mark the party’s lead in the election by distributing sweets and shouting affirmations in the form of slogans.

4. Electoral Administration: Statement by Chief Electoral Officer

The State Chief Electoral Official, Mr. Manoj Kumar Agarwal, addressed the media regarding the manner in which the election was conducted and stated that all the required steps were implemented to ensure a fair, honest, and peaceful election procedure. He also stated that the law and order were efficiently maintained throughout, and coordinated efforts were made to ensure that the maximum number of voters participated.

Mr Agarwal also said that the administration was prepared to the point that the Election Commission had been formally asked to conduct the elections in one phase and that this was likely to be the goal in the very near future.

Concerning the recounting of votes, the Chief Electoral Officer stated that any recount request would be scrutinized strictly in accordance with the stipulated conditions that govern these procedures. He also clarified that the returning officers (ROs) had been properly informed of the regulations applicable.
