As a further step toward promoting consumer rights, Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has mandated that all food business establishments clearly specify—effective May 1, 2026—whether the food they prepare contains *paneer* or cheese analogues.
Regulations Under the Order
This rule applies to restaurants, hotels, caterers, and fast-food joints. According to the order, these establishments must explicitly state whether the food items they serve contain paneer or cheese, or if an alternative—such as cheese analogues—has been utilised in the preparation.
FDA Commissioner Shridhar Dubey-Patil issued this order in response to a rising number of complaints alleging that restaurants were serving customers imitation cheese without their knowledge.

Deadline for Compliance
Establishments have been given a deadline of April 30, 2026, to implement the necessary changes to their menus and labelling. If any violation of this order is detected, authorities will initiate inspections and take strict action against the violators in accordance with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
What Are Cheese Analogues?
Cheese analogues are products composed of vegetable oils and/or, in some cases, dairy ingredients; they are formulated using vegetable oils, starches, and emulsifiers. Although distinct in composition, they closely resemble authentic paneer or cheese in both taste and appearance.
