A Story of Promise and Near Misses
Originally named Delhi Daredevils, the franchise started off strongly, making it to semi-finals during the initial two IPL seasons. But inconsistency quickly became the defining feature.
Their turning point was in 2020 when they made their first IPL final and fell short against the mighty Mumbai Indians. The following year they won the league stage, but were unable to turn their dominance into silverware, and eventually lost from the tournament.
The rebranding in 2018 into “Delhi Capitals” marked a pivotal moment in. A renewed emphasis on youth and a spirited cricket allowed them to return to playoff contention. They will make appearances in 2019and 2020 and 2021.
Evolution and Key Turning Points
The journey of Delhi was shaped through missed opportunities as achievements. The first squad choices allowed them to pass on the next generation of legends such as Virat Kohli, and releasing established players such as Gautam Gambhir who later helped lead Kolkata Knight Riders to multiple wins.
In the past, a number of elite players have left from the team such as AB de Villiers, Andre Russell and Trent Boult. They were all decisions that, looking back have impacted stability over the long term.
