India and the United Arab Emirates UAE stepped up defence cooperation with the launch of Exercise Mountain Guardian 2026, a joint military exercise focused on mountain warfare and operations in challenging terrain. The exercise began on October 5 at the Foreign Training Node in Chaubatia, Uttarakhand, and will continue until October 18.
The two-week exercise brings together 92 military personnel, with equal representation from the Indian Army and the UAE Army. The Indian contingent comprises troops from a Bhairav Battalion, while the UAE contingent has personnel from a Mountain Infantry Battalion.
The exercise is aimed at improving interoperability, strengthening mutual understanding and enabling both armies to exchange operational experience and best practices.
Mountain Warfare at the Centre of the Exercise
Mountain warfare requires specialised skills because soldiers have to operate in difficult terrain, steep slopes, unpredictable weather and areas where conventional military movement can be challenging.
Exercise Mountain Guardian has therefore been designed around a series of activities that replicate some of these operational challenges. According to the Ministry of Defence, the participating troops will conduct joint planning, tactical drills, firing practices, surveillance-grid exercises, drone operations and integrated field exercises.
The training programme will also include rock climbing, obstacle training and physical endurance exercises. These activities are intended to test the troops’ ability to maintain operational effectiveness while operating in demanding mountainous conditions.
For both armies, such training provides an opportunity to understand how another military approaches planning, movement, surveillance and tactical coordination in difficult terrain.
Drones and Technology to Get Special Focus
Technology-enabled operations are another important component of Mountain Guardian 2026.
The exercise will involve drone operations and the establishment of surveillance grids, allowing troops to train in the use of technology for reconnaissance and situational awareness. The two sides will also exchange tactics, techniques and procedures relevant to operations in mountainous areas.
The increasing use of unmanned systems has changed the way modern militaries conduct surveillance and battlefield reconnaissance. Training together allows participating forces to understand how such systems can be incorporated into tactical operations and coordinated with ground troops.
The focus on technology also reflects a broader shift in military exercises, where conventional field training is increasingly combined with surveillance systems, drones and other modern capabilities.
Women Personnel Also Participating
The exercise has also included women officers and combatants from both armies in various specialist roles.
Their participation adds another dimension to the joint training programme and provides an opportunity for personnel from both countries to work together across different operational and specialist functions.
The exercise is structured to encourage interaction between the participating contingents rather than simply conducting separate training activities.
Strengthening India-UAE Defence Ties
Mountain Guardian is part of the broader expansion of India-UAE defence cooperation. While India and the UAE have strong economic and diplomatic ties, defence and security cooperation has also become an increasingly important component of the bilateral relationship.
Joint exercises provide a practical mechanism for strengthening military-to-military engagement. They allow troops to develop familiarity with each other’s procedures and improve coordination in situations where joint or coordinated operations may be required.
The Ministry of Defence said the exercise would provide opportunities to exchange professional experience, improve tactical proficiency and share best practices in operational procedures. It is also expected to reinforce the bonds of friendship and trust between the two countries.
Why Uttarakhand Is Important for the Exercise
The choice of Chaubatia in Uttarakhand is closely linked to the exercise’s focus on mountain warfare. The region provides terrain suitable for training in activities such as rock climbing, obstacle crossing, physical endurance and tactical movement in mountainous conditions.
Uttarakhand has also emerged as an important location for India’s international military exercises. Earlier this year, India conducted the Dharma Guardian exercise with Japan at Chaubatia, while other exercises involving the US and Mongolia have also included training in Uttarakhand.
This makes the region an important training environment for foreign military contingents seeking experience in mountain and high-altitude operational conditions.
Learning From Each Other
One of the key objectives of Mountain Guardian is not simply to demonstrate capabilities but to facilitate professional exchange.
Indian troops bring extensive experience of operating in mountainous environments, while the UAE contingent contributes its own military experience and specialised training. Joint drills can help both sides identify differences in tactics, procedures and operational approaches.
Such exchanges can also improve communication between personnel and build familiarity that can be valuable during future bilateral engagements.
A Broader Pattern of Military Cooperation
The India-UAE exercise comes amid a period of increased military engagement between India and several international partners.
In September, India and the US conducted the 22nd edition of Yudh Abhyas, which included training in mountainous and semi-mountainous terrain and the use of drones and autonomous systems. India also conducted the Nomadic Elephant exercise with Mongolia in Uttarakhand, focusing on counter-insurgency operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain.
These exercises highlight India’s continued emphasis on improving interoperability with partner countries across different operational environments.

What Mountain Guardian Aims to Achieve
Exercise Mountain Guardian 2026 will run until October 18. During this period, troops from India and the UAE will continue joint tactical training, field exercises and technology-enabled activities.
The immediate objective is to enhance the ability of both armies to operate together, while the broader goal is to deepen military cooperation and professional exchanges.
The exercise also demonstrates how bilateral defence relationships are increasingly moving beyond high-level dialogue towards practical, field-level cooperation.
With mountain warfare, drones, surveillance and tactical coordination at its core, Mountain Guardian 2026 provides India and the UAE with an opportunity to build interoperability while strengthening their wider defence partnership.
As the exercise progresses, the exchange of operational knowledge and experience between the two contingents is expected to remain a central focus, reinforcing the military relationship between the two countries.
